Labor Day - Apple Pickin'

Today we got do finally cross off something that had been on our “to-do” list for a LOOONNNGGG time – we went apple picking. Our summer of fun outings continued today, and we enjoyed a tease of fall weather.

Katie has been asking me to go to Skytop Orchard for the last two years, and today we went up to Flat Rock, North Carolina and enjoyed the nice September weather by walking through dozens and dozens of apple trees. The only way to truly celebrate Labor Day was laboring over apple picking.

Katie and I have been forcing ourselves to do things that we normally wouldn’t. We prefer to stay inside the comforts of our comfy apartment and enjoy the many luxuries that it provides, but every once in a while, we decide to branch out and be adventurous.

This morning me, Katie, and our friends Zach and Elizabeth loaded up the car on an early morning Labor Day to take the hour drive to Skytop. We spent over an hour walking through the rows of trees, trying different apples that had fallen off the trees (only the guys ate the apples off the ground, the women wouldn’t), and eating apple cider donuts (yes, there are just as delicious as they sound).

After we went through every single row of apple trees that were in season, we came home with several pounds of apples. Now comes the fun part, apple chips, apple pie, apple bread, apple ice cream, apple salsa?, apple muffins….

Sure, you could go to Wal-Mart or Aldi and buy a bag of apples, but that isn't nearly as much fun as going to pick them yourself. Plus, they look at you weird if you bring in your own 20 lb. basket at the grocery store. We plan on going back soon.

Happy Labor Day, friends!
