Marriage Monday: Working from Home

When I was thinking about what to write about for Marriage Monday, I asked Mitchel if he had any suggestions. He mentioned that I should tell people what working from home is really like, both personally and in our marriage.

At first it was lonely and isolating because I was used to being in an office environment with lots of people. But as I began to give myself some flexibility with my schedule and easing into work each day, it got a little easier. I let myself take a 30 minute to an hour lunch break most days to do laundry, or to chop veggies to prep dinner. This has been a big help so that when Mitchel gets home, we aren’t spending time doing those things.

I’ve been trying to meet with different women from our community group at least one day a week for an hour or so to help break up each week. This has been really great for me to get to be around other ladies and grow those relationships.

I even took an entire Monday off a week and a few days after my niece was born. Why? Because I COULD! One of the things I was bummed about before she was born was that I live too far away and knew with my full time job I wouldn’t be able to go see her as much as I would have liked in the first few weeks of her life. Well, the freedom and flexibility of working for myself has allowed me to see her a few times just in 3 short weeks!

For our marriage, me not having people to talk to during the day has been a little rough on Mitchel. Haha. The first few days, when he got home, he was tired, but all I wanted to do was TALK! I wanted to tell him all about my day, plus hear all about his! I quickly learned that I was going to have to channel some of my words into other areas so I didn’t overwhelm him when he got home. So, I’ve been listening to more podcasts, trying to get out of the house more (working from Starbucks, etc), and meeting with people throughout the week, or scheduling photo sessions during the day.

All in all, working from home hasn’t been as scary as I thought it would be. I have made my office a cozy environment that I actually enjoy being in, which has also been really helpful!
