Okay, let’s give you a look behind the curtain. This is Mitchel writing this – Hi!

I don’t want to have to use the “we” pronouns in this post. Now, let’s get into the post.

I recently finished a book by Zig Ziglar, Born to Win: Find Your Success Code. If you forgive the giant QR code on the front cover, you can find some great stuff inside.

One of the key points of the book revolves around the idea of “balance.” Ziglar uses the idea of a wheel when talking about balance. Each part of your life is a spoke of a wheel:

  • Health
  • Work
  • Family
  • Friends
  • Spiritual
  • Financial
  • Mental

Imagine a wheel on a bicycle. What would happen if one of the spokes on the wheel were shorter than one of the others?

The idea is simple. If one of the areas in our life is being neglected, the other areas in our life are probably going to suffer as well.

This idea stuck out to me. Why? Because I can see this idea reflected in our lives as well.

Both Katie and I put a lot of effort into our work. I’ve started noticing, the more we put into our jobs, the less time we are putting on our marriage. The marriage “spoke” starts to suffer.

If we start to slack on our spiritual life, the other areas are going to lag behind. We won’t focus on what matters.

Let’s say your wheel is uneven and you try and go for a bike ride. You have an uneven wheel, that’s not going to be very comfortable, is it? Probably not.

I finished this book about a week ago, and this idea of balance has barely left my mind. Most books I read have way more adventures and fighting, but this book is one of those that is going to stick with me.

Both of us like to dive head first into things. We aren’t always good at saying no when we should and we will pack our schedules completely full. There is nothing wrong with doing that from time to time. It’s life. People are busy, but if you aren’t careful, you’ll find yourself with a triangle for a tire, and that’s not going to get you anywhere.
