Here’s to you, new fiancé! And a huge CONGRATS! You’re engaged!
If you’re like me when I was newly engaged, you’re probably reminding yourself not to stare down at that sparkly thing on your left hand with every change of light that comes across it. I give you permission, just not when you’re driving, please. ;)
Here are a few pieces of advice for you and your fiancé as you enjoy this new season of life and beginning to plan!
Don’t forget to bask in the excitement!
Before you jump head first into planning your wedding and looking at all of the details of what your wedding could be, stop. Take a moment to just be. To celebrate with your fiancé. To think about your future together before getting overwhelmed with wedding dress shopping, choosing a venue, figuring out your date, etc. All of that can wait!
Journal about your feelings and emotions.
I suggest doing this the night of your engagement or the morning after. But really any time will do! Write out how it all happened, how he proposed, where you were, your feelings and emotions, all of it! You want to remember everything and how it went down! After you’ve been married for 20 years, you’ll look back on those words and you will be able to picture it like it was yesterday.
Celebrate with family and friends!
It doesn’t have to be an elaborate engagement party, but at least take time to celebrate with the ones you love! Gather together with family and friends to have dinner together to celebrate the new fiancés! Getting engaged is an extremely exciting time in your life, and it’s even more enjoyable when you can share it with friends and family.
Have some “Real” Talks
Before you dive head first into into caterers and venues, have some serious talks with your new fiancé. Talk about your expectations, not only for your wedding but also for your marriage. How much do you want to spend on the wedding? Who’s going to take the trash out? Where do you want to get married? Will there be a TV in your bedroom. Having these talks now is going to save you some frustration and arguments in the future.
Talk to Friends
I’m sure you have people you love who are married or engaged. Talk to them! They probably have some great advice for planning a wedding and starting your life together. We got TONS of words of wisdom while we were engaged from those around us. It’s always best to learn from other people’s stories instead of having to go through those mistakes yourself. But I do caution you from thinking that you have to take every piece of advice you’re given. That can get overwhelming.
Engagement is one of the most fun times of your life, but it’s only just the beginning. We know it can be stressful and hectic, but stop and enjoy it. Finding the perfect dress is a magical time. Embrace it.
