Having a Destination Wedding In South Carolina

Happy married couple walking for photographer in edisto island

Believe it or not, South Carolina is a popular spot for destination weddings. Pre-COVID days, more and more couples and families were traveling to the beautiful Palmetto state to tie the knot. If you’re from South Carolina, you probably aren’t surprised to hear this. I mean, who wouldn’t want to get married in this amazing state, but when we talk to those who aren’t from around here, they normally say, “A destination wedding…. In South Carolina…why? Or…where?”

Okay, I’ll admit, South Carolina probably isn’t the first place that comes to mind when you think about a travel wedding. You probably imagine places like Mexico, the Bahamas, or the Dominican Republic. Sure, all those places are okay, I guess.

BUT, there are several spots in S.C. that have become the most popular places in the United States to say I Do.

Destination Wedding Spots in South Carolina

To help out anyone who’s wanting to get married in the Palmetto State, we have some cities to start with. This is by no means all of the popular wedding spots, it’s just a few of our favorites. If you have any questions about any of these destination wedding cities, send us a message and we can get coffee.

Greenville, SC Wedding Destination

This one may surprise some of you, but we see a lot of couples coming from out of town to get married in Greenville. Greenville, SC is one of the fastest-growing cities and is one of the “go-to” places for young couples looking to get married in the city without spending a fortune.

One reason we personally love weddings in Greenville, SC is the access to dozens of venues, all of them having their unique vibe. If you’re a modern, more city-style, Greenville has more than enough venues to choose from. Without having to drive more than 10 minutes, you’ll be able to pick from dozens of country-chic barn venues. Want to get married in a charming park? Greenville has that too!

Charleston Destination Wedding

For anyone having a destination wedding in South Carolina, Charleston is probably going to be at the top of the list. Charleston, SC is one of the most popular spots in the state.

We’ve seen couples from North Carolina, Georgia, Tennessee, and much further plan their wedding in Charleston to enjoy all of the beauty and charm the city has to offer. If you’ve never been to Charleston, you don’t know what you’re missing.

Charleston is the wedding town that you’ve always dreamed of. Cobblestones, great for biking, and right on the water. If you want to ditch your car, you’ll be able to walk to all of the best restaurants, hotels, bars, and even the beach. You can get around anywhere you want on foot or by bike.

When it comes to wedding venues, you’ll have your choice between historic venues full of character or even getting married on the beachfront. Usually, we see couples choosing to get married right on the beach overlooking the water, but that isn’t the only option.

One of our favorite Charleston wedding venues is the William Aiken House. Not only is it a charming, historic home in downtown Charleston, but it’s great for the full-wedding day experience. The home has more than enough room to get dressed, enjoy the day, and the courtyard is PERFECT for a quaint wedding reception.

Isle of Palms Destination Wedding

Not far from downtown Charleston, Isle of Palms is the iconic destination for any couple looking for a beachfront wedding. The Isle of Palms gives you the dream location if you want to get married on the sand or even at a beach house

The island itself has a long and rich history dating back hundreds of years. Islandreality.com gives the best description about Isle of Palms,

Isle of Palms is an idyllic island town, separated from the mainland by the Intracoastal Waterway. Located just 12 miles from the excitement of downtown Charleston, Isle of Palms is a perpetually relaxing beach community. Due to its unique mix of both vacation rentals and permanent residences, Isle of Palms maintains a strong sense of community. Every vacation rental visitor is immediately accepted as a member of this community.

The most popular wedding spot on the Isle of Palms is the Wild Dunes Resort. Not only is it AMAZING for vacation, but it offers couples dozens of ceremony spots, including a roof-top option. For those looking for an all-in-one-stop wedding, this is your choice. I mean, your guests will be able to have a room feet away from the ceremony.

Hilton Head

We included Hilton Head for two reasons. First, because it’s one of our favorite places to go every year. We just love going on vacation in Hilton Head, even if it’s just for a long weekend.

Hilton Head is known across the country for its golf (which is great, I’m sure), but the island offers so much more than hitting the links. Hilton Head has grown so much in the past decade, and it’s no longer the sleepy island town it once was. While locals may not enjoy all the new traffic, it’s become an ideal landing spot for a couple wanting a mixture of beach town without having to sacrifice convenience.

If anyone in the wedding party is a golfer, they will love you for picking Hilton Head as your I Do location. They have no shortage of top-tier courses, which is great for the days leading up to the big day.
