When couples ask me where to get married in South Carolina, they often assume it’s Charleston. Or maybe a beach somewhere. But after photographing over 50 weddings across the state, I’ll tell you the same thing every time: Upstate SC is where the magic happens.
The truth isn’t that lowcountry beaches are bad. They’re stunning—all those oak trees, that moss, that Instagram-level charm. And yes, they come with Instagram-level prices.
The truth is simpler: upstate South Carolina gives you everything those other regions offer, without the destination-wedding logistics or the premium markup. You get historic beauty without the travel nightmare. You get mountain views without the drive. You get diverse venues in one region, price points that don’t require a second mortgage, and vendors who actually know their spaces intimately.
And here’s the part that matters most to us as photographers: when you get married matters almost as much as where. The season changes everything—light, weather, vibe, pricing, even how the venue photographs.
So let’s talk about both.
Upstate vs. Lowcountry: Historic venues in Charleston run $3,000–$6,000+ just for the space. Add in hotel accommodations for 100+ guests (everyone floods Charleston), vendor premiums (everyone charges extra there), and your budget just went up 30%. Upstate gives you 80% of the Charleston aesthetic for 50% of the price. But more importantly, it gives you variety. In upstate, you can get married at a 1925 mansion (Gassaway) one weekend and have the next couple say vows in a contemporary urban loft (AC Hotel) just 20 minutes away.
Upstate vs. Mountain Getaways: Some couples think, “If we want mountains, we should go to Asheville.” But you don’t have to leave South Carolina to get mountain views. Pickens County offers genuine mountain scenery—dramatic vistas, elevation, scenic beauty. And you get to skip the destination-wedding logistics. Your guests aren’t taking time off or spending a fortune. They’re driving 2–3 hours max, staying one night, and done. You get mountain beauty without the chaos.
The Real Advantage: Variety + Price + Accessibility. Whether you’re planning 25 guests or 300, whether your budget is $1,500 or $5,000, whether you want historic, modern, garden, rustic, chapel, or urban—upstate has it. And your vendors actually know these spaces. Your florist knows how to work with Lacee Meadows’ garden. Your caterer knows the barn aesthetic at Oakbrook. They’ve done it before, not for the first time guessing.
After photographing weddings at these spaces across all four seasons, we’ve learned exactly which months make each venue shine—and which require strategic planning.
Gassaway Mansion, Greenville
The first time we stepped onto Gassaway’s grounds, we understood why it’s Greenville’s most beloved venue. That 1925 mansion with white columns, the antique art lining the interiors, the fairytale tent lighting—it all just works. We’ve photographed 14+ weddings here, and honestly, we could do 14 more.
What makes Gassaway special isn’t just the architecture (though it’s stunning). It’s the feeling. There’s something about a historic mansion that makes every couple feel like royalty. The all-inclusive packages handle florals, catering, rentals, even parking attendants. You’re choosing a photographer and caterer, not juggling five vendors.
Best seasons: Fall is peak (October is absolutely stunning, with warm light hitting those brick columns). But April–May runs a close second—spring light is perfect, the grounds are manicured, and you’re not fighting peak pricing.
Capacity: Up to 250 guests
Price range: $2,500–$4,500
What we love: The multiple portrait locations—staircase, gardens, porch, tent lighting at night. Everything photographs beautifully.

Belle Crane Inn, Greenville
Belle Crane Inn feels like stepping into a period film. Crown molding, vintage staircases, intimate rooms—it’s a detail photographer’s dream. We’ve shot intimate weddings here (50–100 guests feel right at Belle Crane), and couples who book here tend to be the ones who appreciate architecture and history.
The venue has a romantic, literary vibe. Think Austen novel meets modern love story. This isn’t a massive ballroom situation. You feel like you’re getting married in your own Victorian home.
Best seasons: Fall and winter photography is stunning here. Fall gives you warm, dramatic light hitting Victorian details. Winter formal creates elegant, intimate atmosphere with candlelight and gold tones.
Capacity: 50–150 guests
Price range: $1,800–$3,500
What we love: The architectural bones. Every corner is frame-worthy. Period details that feel authentic, not forced.

Lacee Meadows, Belton
Lacee Meadows is where couples go when they dream of gardens, natural backdrops, and manicured beauty. This isn’t a “bring your own tent” situation—it’s a designed landscape that’s already gorgeous. The grounds offer 15+ distinct photography locations within walking distance. Garden archways, tree-lined paths, open lawn, intimate garden rooms.
We’ve shot here 8+ times, and we keep finding new angles. If you love nature but want infrastructure (restrooms, climate-controlled spaces, professional setup), Lacee delivers.
Best seasons: Spring is peak season here. The gardens are in full bloom, the trees are leafing out, and the light filtering through new growth is chef’s kiss for portraits. Every spring wedding we’ve shot at Lacee has that lush, romantic garden vibe that photos don’t even do justice to. August–early September runs second—you get mature garden beauty without the spring-wedding chaos and with slightly lower pricing.
Capacity: 25–200 guests
Price range: $1,500–$3,500
What we love: The landscape variety. Endless portrait options. That perfect golden-hour light through the trees. Couples who book here tend to be nature lovers who also appreciate being comfortable.

Oakbrook Farms, Ridgeway
Oakbrook walks that line between rustic and refined beautifully. The barn is historic but updated. The grounds are manicured but feel natural. It’s rustic without being rough around the edges. We’ve photographed 7+ weddings here, and the couples who choose Oakbrook want that “we got married in a barn” story with the comfort and elegance of a modern venue.
The 300-person capacity means it works for large weddings too.
Best seasons: October is peak (the barn aesthetic pairs beautifully with fall colors). But August–early September is our photographer pick—you get stunning late-season light, manicured grounds, incredible depth in photos, and you’re just past peak pricing. The rustic vibe pairs beautifully with autumn foliage.
Capacity: 100–300 guests
Price range: $2,000–$4,000
What we love: The contrast—rough wood beams against manicured grounds. The natural lighting. Multiple ceremony and reception options. Couples feel like they’re getting the best of both worlds.

AC Hotel Greenville
For couples who want sleek lines, floor-to-ceiling windows, and a contemporary aesthetic, AC Hotel is the answer. This isn’t “we decorated an old building to feel modern”—this is a modern building designed for events. The natural light is incredible. No harsh shadows. No struggling with weird ceiling heights. And the view of downtown Greenville? Chef’s kiss.
We’ve shot 5+ weddings here, and they tend to be couples with minimalist taste, creative vision, and a “let the space speak for itself” approach.
Best seasons: Early summer and winter are your best bets. June–early July gives you long summer light (golden hour until 9pm) with modern climate control—host your ceremony at 7am or 5pm, reception indoors, and you get perfect photography light. Winter is equally stunning—modern venues shine when the light is clean and dramatic. No humidity, no heat, just clean lines at their best.
Capacity: 50–300 guests
Price range: $2,500–$4,500
What we love: The windows. The light. The flexibility. Brides who book here usually have a clear aesthetic vision, which makes our job easier.

Glassy Mountain Chapel, Pickens
Glassy Mountain Chapel is for elopements and intimate ceremonies (25–100 guests). It’s a real chapel with real stained glass and that peaceful energy sacred spaces have. The mountain views don’t hurt either. And the price point is incredibly accessible compared to larger venues.
We’ve shot small ceremonies here where the couple felt like they were getting married in their own private sanctuary.
Best seasons: Winter is actually stunning here. Without all the summer foliage, the mountain views are even more dramatic. The chapel’s stained glass gets beautiful low-angle light. December weddings here feel sacred and special.
Capacity: 25–100 guests
Price range: $800–$1,500
What we love: The authenticity. This isn’t a “chapel-style” venue trying to feel spiritual. It IS one. Couples who choose here know what they want—an intimate ceremony in a real place.

Cliffs at Glassy Chapel, Pickens
If Glassy Mountain is intimate, Cliffs is intimate-but-slightly-bigger (50–200 guests). The ceremony location sits right on the cliff edge with mountain views that stretch forever. Imagine saying your vows with that vista behind you. The photos practically take themselves.
Best seasons: Same as Glassy Mountain—winter is peak. But the elevation change at Cliffs creates beautiful photo compositions in any season. Fall is secondary (dramatic mountain views against fall foliage).
Capacity: 50–200 guests
Price range: $1,200–$2,500
What we love: The elevation change creates beautiful photo compositions. That view. Couples who want outdoor drama without traveling to the mountains because you’re already there.

Here’s what we’ve learned after shooting across all four seasons:
SPRING (March–May) is peak season for garden venues like Lacee Meadows. The gardens are in full bloom, the light is perfect (not too harsh, not too dim), and temperatures are mild for outdoor ceremonies. Spring pricing is lower than summer/fall, and you’re not fighting the crowds. Downside: spring has rain, so weather backups are essential.
EARLY SUMMER (June–early July) is tricky. Beautiful long days (golden hour until 9pm), but heat and humidity ramp up. Afternoon outdoor ceremonies get hot. This is peak pricing season. Your best bet: early-morning or evening ceremonies with climate-controlled receptions. AC Hotel shines here.
LATE SUMMER/EARLY FALL (August–mid-September) is our photographer pick. You’re just past peak pricing (vendors have more flexibility), gardens still gorgeous but starting to mature, light is richer than spring, and fewer bugs. This is when Oakbrook Farms really shines. You get stunning depth in photos without peak-season crowds or premium pricing.
FALL (Mid-September–November) is peak wedding season, and for good reason. Perfect temperatures (70s, low humidity), incredible warm and dramatic light, historic venues photograph at their absolute best, natural color palette in the landscape. Everyone wants it, so book early and expect peak pricing. This is Gassaway’s moment. October availability fills 8+ months in advance.
WINTER (December–February) is underrated. Off-peak pricing (20–30% cheaper), dramatic moody light, minimal foliage (architectural details show), humidity-free, intimate energy. Glassy Mountain Chapel is absolutely stunning in winter. Belle Crane Inn’s winter formal is gorgeous. AC Hotel’s modern aesthetic shines with clean winter light.
| Venue | Best Season | Why | Budget Impact |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gassaway Mansion | October | Warm light on historic brick, fall foliage | Peak pricing |
| Belle Crane Inn | October or December | Historic details in warm/formal light | Peak (fall) or mid-range (winter) |
| Lacee Meadows | April–May | Full bloom gardens, perfect light | Lower than summer/fall |
| Oakbrook Farms | August–September or October | Golden light + fall color, manicured grounds | Mid-range or peak |
| AC Hotel | June–July or December | Long summer light or clean winter light | Peak (summer) or mid-range (winter) |
| Glassy Mountain | December | Dramatic mountain views, clear light | Off-peak pricing |
| Cliffs at Glassy | December or October | Mountain drama + clean or warm light | Off-peak or peak |
As photographers, here’s what we know:
Best light overall: April/May or October. Warm but not harsh, dramatic but not extreme.
Best for portraits: April, May, September, October. Perfect temperatures, gorgeous light, subjects not sweating.
Best for bold aesthetics: January–February. Dramatic light, moody atmosphere, modern venues pop.
Best for detail shots: March–May. Natural color in gardens, foliage for frames, soft morning light.
Avoid if possible: July–mid-August. Harsh light, heat challenges, everyone’s booked, peak pricing.
